The concept for Risa Punoâs public artwork, Through Thick and Thin, for the stairwell of the Dalton Recreation Center is inspired by Mary Cali Daltonâs compassionate dedication to the residents of Staten Island and the resilience of the Clove Lakes Colossus, a giant tulip poplar tree that is one of the largest and oldest organisms in NYC. Visitors will be invited to look through translucent panels reminiscent of tulip tree leaves or petals, each incorporating different community members' facial silhouettes. These panels collectively represent the tulip tree's protective canopy and bright flowers, symbolizing care, joy, and community. This artwork serves as a tribute to Mary Cali Dalton's vibrant legacy, bringing people together in the spirit of Staten Islandâs 'Chief of Magic.'
