WOOD, STAIN, FASTENERS
2 x 116 x 50 feet
In the Balance is an interactive structure for open-ended play made up of long wooden balance beams that are spaced 6 feet apart and interlaced throughout the triangular park area. There are three different paths that weave over and under one another, making it difficult to know exactly where each will lead.
The act of walking along the balance beams is essentially a metaphor for our efforts to maintain balance and stability throughout the long and confusing journey of the pandemic. The various twists and turns represent the pivots that we make as circumstances and recommendations change. And the many intersections between paths symbolize our shared experience and the importance of maintaining awareness of others, even when we are focused on our own goals.
Designed to be experienced collectively and individually at the same time, In the Balance is a reminder that despite the uncertainty of the future, all we can do is put one foot in front of the other and know that we are in this together.
In the Balance was a temporary outdoor installation commissioned by the New Children’s Museum in San Diego, CA. It was fabricated by New Children’s Museum staff.
