I am proud to announce that I have been included in El Museo del Barrio's 7th biennial exhibition, La Bienal 2013: Here Is Where We Jump, opening on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 from 7-9pm.
For La Bienal 2013, I was invited to reconstruct my disco ball piñata from 2010. However, this time I filled it with items that I collected from the artists in the exhibition. Titled Breaking Bienal, this piñata contains: objects that relate to the artists' work in the show, artifacts of their artmaking process (like material remnants, test objects, etc.), and even some special pieces that they created just for my project!
During most of the exhibition, my piece will operate on a motor with pin spotlights, just like a regular mirror ball reflecting light around the room. After a few months, the public will be invited to come and smash my shiny, celebratory object, putting all the artists’ contributions up for grabs.
I will post an update once we finalize the date for the piñata smashing, but in the meantime, I hope you can come out and help us celebrate the opening of the exhibition. It is going to be a super fun event with music, booze, and lots of great art!
El Museo del Barrio is located at 1230 5th Ave (at 104th St) in Manhattan. Take the 6 train to 103 St station, or the 2/3 train to Central Park North (110 Street). (Click here for more directions.) If you are planning on coming, please RSVP to members@elmuseo.org.
